الأجداد ذممٌ في أعناق الأحفاد، وسيرتهم معينٌ لاينضب من الحكمة والأحداث والإضافات التاريخية، بوصفها نوافذ مشرّعة على فهم الماضي وتفاصيله الضرورية في بناء المستقبل.

وحين يكون الماضي عامراً بشخصية ٍمن طراز صنّاع التاريخ، ذات المواصفات القيادية المؤثّرة في محيطها القريب والبعيد، فإن الإطلالة عليها تغدو مهمة، خاصةً مع سيرة ٍستبقى شاخصةً في ذاكرة الأيام، عنوانها الشيخ زايد بن خليفة أو زايد الأول أو زايد الكبير، وهي ألقابٌ تتفق وتعكس طبيعة دور وقامة هذا الحاكم الذي ترك بصمة واضحة على إمارة أبوظبي خلال حكمه لأربعةٍ وخمسين عاماً (1855-1909).

وإيماناً من هيئة أبوظبي للثقافة والتراث بإضاءة كافة جوانب الهوية الوطنية وجعل التراث نشاطاً ذا أثر ٍ في حياة المجتمع، فإنها تفتح نافذة واسعة على تراث الآباء والأجداد ليطل منها جيل اليوم والأجيال اللاحقة في عملية تواصل مستمرة تحقق ثنائية الوجود بين الأصالة والمعاصرة. هذه النافذة تأتي استكمالاً لفعاليات متعددة الأوجه وفي كافة الميادين بتوجيهات من صاحب السمو الشيخ خليفة بن زايد آل نهيان رئيس الدولة حفظه الله، وبرعاية سمو الشيخ محمد بن زايد آل نهيان ولي عهد أبوظبي نائب القائد الأعلى للقوات المسلحة، لمواصلة مسيرة الأصالة والتحديث التي أرسى دعائمها المغفور له الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان. أما نافذة هذا الملف، فتأتي ضمن حملة شاملة تستهدف تكريس الوعي وإشاعة المعرفة بالرموز والشخصيات التاريخية والاجتماعية والثقافية لمجتمع إمارة أبوظبي وعموم دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، وإبراز منجزاتها، وإحياء إرثه الكبير ليكون منارة تهتدي بها الأجيال القادمة، وتطلق هذه الحملة بالتزامن مع مرور مئة عام على وفاة الشيخ زايد بن خليفة في التاسع عشر من مايو/ أيار سنة 1909.

ومع هذه الذكرى، تفتح هيئة أبوظبي للثقافة والتراث ملفاً هاماً ولأول مرة يعكس ملامح من حياة الشيخ زايد الأول، ليكون بين يدي القاريء العام وليس المتخصص والباحث فحسب، حيث بقيت سيرته لعشرات السنين رهن المصادر وبطون الكتب في الرفوف الخلفية من التراكم القرائي اليومي. كما أننا نعمل في هذه الفترة على إبراز العديد من الأنشطة ذات الطابع التذكيري بتراث الأجداد، وهي رسالة نراها لا تخلو من مهمة حضارية وضرورية أيضاً.

Foreword

It is our solemn responsibility to interpret the history of our ancestors. The events of their lives help us to understand the past and to plan the future.

The task of doing so becomes even more important when dealing with an individual who helped shape history and whose leadership had a real and lasting impact on both local and international levels. Sheikh Zayed Bin Khalifa, who ruled the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as Sheikh Zayed the First, or ‘Zayed the Great’, for fifty four years between 1855 and 1909, is one such individual.

The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage is committed to raising awareness about all aspects of national identity and heritage. It seeks to shed light upon the heritage of our ancestors so that current and future generations can appreciate the important role that the past continues to play in the development of our modern society.

This examination of the achievements of Sheikh Zayed the First is just one of various projects in different areas initiated by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and being implemented under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. The common aim of these initiatives is to assist Abu Dhabi’s onward progress towards modernisation whilst honouring and preserving traditional values as envisaged by the Late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may he rest in peace).

The present project is part of a comprehensive public education campaign to raise awareness about great historical figures in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the UAE , and highlight their achievements. It also aims at reviving the legacy of Sheikh Zayed the First and presenting it to the new generations.  The campaign coincides with the centenary of the death of Sheikh Zayed the First on 19 May, 1909.

Until recently, information about Sheikh Zayed the First was largely limited to obscure reference sources available only to specialists. The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage wishes to honour the centenary of Sheikh Zayed the First’s death by making the details of his life more widely available to the general public.
